Life has a way of handing us challenges when we least expect them. For me, those challenges started early. As the oldest of 10 children—a mix of biological, adopted, and foster siblings—responsibility wasn’t something I could avoid. My parents taught me the importance of hard work and service, but my father unknowingly gave me the gift of figuring things out.
At just 12 years old, I learned a life-changing lesson—when faced with an obstacle, you can either let it stop you or find a way forward. My father told me that if I wanted to continue my dance and baton lessons, I would have to pay for them myself. I had no idea where to start, but that moment forced me to think differently, problem-solve, and take ownership of my future.
That mindset carried me through life’s biggest challenges. By 25, I was a single mother of two young children with no financial safety net. I had to figure out how to provide for my family, so I found a job, learned to budget, and stretched every dollar to make ends meet. I quickly realized that financial security isn’t about how much money you make—it’s about how well you manage what you have.
Years later, after remarrying, I learned another lesson in financial discipline. My husband and I committed to paying off our home within three years, which required a strict budget. One month, I overspent and asked him to cover an extra $50 for groceries—he said "no". That moment shocked me, but it also pushed me to become more resourceful, creative, and accountable for my financial choices.
It reminded me that:
I had married a man who honored his word and expected me to do the same.
I was far more resourceful than I had given myself credit for. When faced with limited resources, I became creative, stretching my budget and making meals with what I had.
True growth happens when we are forced to "figure it out."
Now, as a resilience coach and financial mindset expert, I help women navigate their own life transitions whether they’re facing divorce, career loss, financial setbacks, or personal crises. I created the Figure It Out Formula to share the mindset, strategies, and faith-driven approach that helped me not only survive life’s toughest moments but come out stronger, wiser, and more financially secure.
